Ski Bikes
The design of ski bikes has been taking place over the last 150 years at least. Different designs have come about by trial and error and as new materials have become available. Ski bikes have been developed with different ski configurations and some use snowboard instead of skis. One main consideration for the designers is where to put your feet. Some have foot rests whilst other types rely on foot skis to act as stabilizers.
Different configurations of skis give the ski bike different characteristics. When you have foot skis they can act in the same way as stabilizers on a bicycle. However many designs have foot rests above the rear ski allowing you to use the downward pressure to slide the rear ski into a turn. Without foot skis you have to balance the ski bike and be able to control the slide using only the body weight. In the same way tricycles give a more stable platform their are now designs that use 3 skis. As with tricycles you cannot lean the bike into a corner so higher speed cornering is not as easy but slow speed control and stability is improved.
The other major difference in design is whether or not you have a seat to sit on. The seat makes it easier on the knees and less fatiguing. If a seat is included then you need a good suspension to soak up the bumps unless you want your butt to ache. So The best thing if you are thinking of buying a ski bike or snowbob is to try out the various models from different manufacturers to find out what suits your style best. Many manufacturers have site dedicated to demonstrating their particular designs of skibikes.
